Outings
At Unity College, we believe that hands-on experience is not just a supplement but a vital part of teaching and learning. Our approach is unique as we extend learning beyond the classroom and school grounds into the community, integrating real-life experiences into our curriculum. This aligns with our mission to develop skills for independent living in our pupils as we offer a comprehensive educational experience.
Our outings are not just leisure activities but practical extensions of our curriculum, bringing to life what we teach in the classroom. Our pupils’ lived experiences always make for deeper learning, ensuring that our educational programme is not only theoretical but also practical and effective.
We also make a point of going on outings related to food production. All our pupils, irrespective of age, have weekly cookery lessons. Extending their knowledge of products and processes deepens their understanding of where food comes from and how it is prepared. Examples of these outings include visiting a dairy farm, and venues where our pupils make their food in a restaurant environment e.g. visiting a pizzeria is a firm favourite amongst the pupils.
We carefully create links between themes covered in the classroom and visits to venues that support learning. It is important to visit bird parks and other venues where live animals may be seen. The point of following themes like this is to enrich language. Seeing the creatures studied in the classroom in the flesh opens new opportunities to develop vocabulary and communication skills.
