Unity College will be expanding its offering to the special needs community by opening a Vocational Training Centre (VTC) from next year. The VTC will offer a industry accredited course in Hospitality Support – teaching the essential skills needed for working in a commercial kitchen and laundry.
The 200-day course can be completed in one or a flexible extended period depending on the student’s individual abilities and endurance. Classes will run from 08:00 to 15:00 on a Monday and Wednesday, 08:00 to 14:00 on a Tuesday and Thursday, and 08:00 to 13:00 on a Friday. The VTC will follow a four term calendar, similar to the one used by Unity College. Students will be able to make use of the school’s bus system at an additional fee.
The pre-fab building on the western border of the property will be converted into a coffee shop with its own kitchen and a fully-functioning laundry. Both sections of the VTC will be serving the public to expose the students to real-life situations in the workplace. The VTC will operate separately from the school and the area will be closed off with a fence.
This is a very exciting new development, as it will allow school leavers to learn a practical skill for future employment. For more information, please contact the principal on principal@unity-college.org.za
