Unity College is affiliated to Special Olympics South Africa (SOSA) Gauteng and as such we participate in the events organized under their auspices. Learners or athletes get to participate with other athletes with same functional abilities. This helps and enhances our learners’ social abilities and self esteem.
This term we will participate in two events that are on the SOSA calendar, that is seven-a-side boys soccer at Jiswa on Thursday, 7 February and the seven-a-side soccer and netball hosted by Unity College on Wednesday, 13 March. We will also attend one developmental swimming gala as per invitation.
Special Olympics 2019
From 8-22 March, Special Olympics World Games Abu Dhabi 2019 will welcome 7 000 athletes and 3 000 coaches from 170 nations as they participate in 24 officially sanctioned Olympic-style sports. Team South Africa will be sending more than 100 of our country’s best special needs athletes, one of whom is our very own past pupil, Liam Share!
The spectacular Opening Ceremony on 14 March 2019 is expected to attract 45 000 spectators while being viewed by millions worldwide.
