At the end of this year we will be saying good-bye to three members of staff.
Although Teacher Sandy has only been with us for 6 months, she has climbed into the hearts of the young learners in the Junior Phase. She will be remembered for her practical and creative approach to teaching. We wish her well in her new position at a mainstream school. Our loss is definitely their gain!
Teacher Estelle was enjoying her retirement when she received a phone call from Unity College to please return at the beginning of 2019. She slotted right back into her role as Intermediate Phase teacher and acting Head of Department, as if she had never left. Estelle has an excellent understanding of her learners’ needs, something that comes from years of experience. Thank you Estelle for giving us another year of your time. Enjoy your retirement!
Mr Visser was also on retirement when Dr Staples asked him to join Unity College as principal in April 2018. His calm, focused and prompt approach to management and decision-making stood him in good stead at a time when the school was facing many challenges. Not only did he get the school back on track, he also oversaw many improvements to the buildings and facilities, resulting in the premises looking the best it has ever done.
Under his leadership, Unity College opened a Vocational Training Kitchen in March 2019, which will be named after him. He also had the vision to start a mothers’ support network, resulting in the ‘Unity College Moms That Care’ group forming in June 2019.
More recently Deon managed to secure a donation from MTN for new computers for the school’s computer centre (a project that will be rolled out in 2020).
Unity College is undoubtedly indebted to you, Mr Visser, for your leadership and vision. We wish you and Lynette well in your retirement. (Although from what we can see, Deon will still be kept very busy with all his business ventures. In his own words, he does not like doing nothing!)
