Collaborative Efforts in Schools to Enhance Autism Support Services
At Unity College in Chartwell, Johannesburg, we’ve come to understand something deeply important: autism support needs to be a team effort. It’s the parents who fight for their child’s place and voice. It’s the teachers who adapt and innovate. It’s the therapists who notice the smallest steps forward and cheer them on like mile-long strides. And most importantly, it’s the pupils themselves who teach us more than we ever expected.
For pupils with autism spectrum disorder, education must be flexible, intentional, and above all, compassionate. At Unity College, we’ve built a system where collaborative care isn’t the exception; it’s the rule.

Early Intervention and Individualised Learning Plans That Actually Work
We believe in starting support early. Our Early Intervention Centre welcomes pupils from just three years old. This crucial window is when communication patterns, sensory processing, and emotional responses begin to form, and also when timely, customised help can make a huge difference. Our autism support starts at the earliest stages, individualised development plans (IDPs) designed alongside parents, teachers, and therapists.
These IDPs are evolving documents. Every six months, we sit down with parents and the relevant professionals to adjust academic, social, and behavioural goals. Each plan reflects the pupil – not a standardised template, but their actual needs and abilities. We look at what’s working, what isn’t, and where to go from there.
Specialised Teaching Methods in Sensory-Friendly Spaces
Our teachers have access to ongoing training in specialised teaching methods that speak directly to the learning profiles of pupils on the autism spectrum. Additionally, our classrooms are built for learning (and to help ward off overstimulation), whether using visual schedules, structured routines, or reducing sensory load with quieter, uncluttered environments.
We’ve created sensory-friendly classrooms where children who struggle with sound, light, or tactile input can feel calm and focused. This makes a huge difference. Some pupils experience overstimulation as a barrier to learning, and even to participating. Our classrooms help keep the environment predictable, manageable, and safe.

Integrated Therapy
Speech therapy services, occupational therapy for autism, and music therapy are part of the school week. For many of our pupils, therapeutic support is essential. We embed these services into the school day, so children get support in context.
Occupational therapy sessions focus on sensory regulation, fine motor skills, and daily living tasks. Speech therapists work on expressive and receptive language, as well as the all-important skill of social communication. You’d be amazed how speech therapy can boost confidence in ways that ripple across an entire classroom.
Social Skills and Real-Life Readiness

Social skills development is woven into everything we do. Structured group activities, break-time social coaching, and even our work experience programme for older pupils all help strengthen relationship-building and functioning in the outside world.
Unity College’s autism support system is based on deep cooperation between parents, therapists, and teachers. When we come together, we create an environment where pupils with autism are supported and understood.
