Academics
Academics at Unity College
At Unity College, we follow the DCAPS (Differentiated Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement) curriculum, a flexible framework derived from the nationally-used CAPS curriculum in South Africa. DCAPS is specifically designed to meet the diverse needs of students with special educational needs, ensuring that all students can learn effectively.
Curriculum Overview
The DCAPS curriculum includes core content and skills essential for functional and independent living. Emphasising practical work, about 80% of teaching time is dedicated to hands-on activities, while the remaining 20% focuses on written tasks. At Unity College, we further adapt this curriculum to cater to the individual needs of our students.
Junior and Intermediate Phases
In the Junior and Intermediate Phases, the primary focus is on Language and Mathematics, as these subjects are crucial for developing core skills for independent living. Additionally, students engage in Life Skills, which encompass a broad range of subjects including theme work, art, cooking, computers, and daily living skills.
Senior Phase
In the Senior Phase, students study English, Mathematics, and Natural Sciences, as prescribed by the DCAPS curriculum. These subjects aim to equip students with essential skills and knowledge for life beyond school. Additionally, students must complete vocational subjects, and Unity College currently offers:
- Office Administration
- Ancillary Health Care
- Consumer Studies (Food Production)
These vocational subjects are designed to teach skills beneficial for independent living and potential employment after school.
Independent Examination Board Adult Education and Training Examinations (IEB AET)
Our most capable students work towards academic certification by taking the IEB AET examinations in English, Mathematics, and Information Technology. These exams have four difficulty levels, with Level 4 equivalent to NQF Level 1, or Grade 9.
