Dear Parents, Learners and Staff,
Welcome back to the New Year; 2019 promises to be an exciting year in the history of Unity College. We are expecting continued growth in our student numbers which will ensure that the College will keep expanding.
I would like to especially welcome our new Students and their Parents, as well as, all our new Staff. We are indeed very fortunate to have acquired the services of excellent new Staff members:
- Nolene Oosthuizen – Speech Therapist
- Kehilwe Motale – Classroom Assistant for the Junior Phase
- Debbie Röhr – Life Orientation Teacher for the Senior Phase
- Nicole Kayton – Occupational Therapist
- Shauni Richter – Junior Phase Teacher
A new year always heralds new beginnings! We have started to refurbish the sports field. In addition to that, the two new boreholes, which were drilled at the end of last year, will also be operational soon.
The junior play area, at the southern side of the school, is also being upgraded with the artificial lawn which has been laid under the shade netting. The rest of this area will also be re-grassed and a new fence will be erected on the north-western side. This year we are planning to equip one of our spare classrooms to function as a multi-purpose audio visual room.
Continued maintenance is being done on our school buses and I am happy to announce that we will, very soon, be receiving a new Quantum bus which will be used for the Midrand Route.
New white boards and fans were also installed in the classrooms in order to upgrade the teaching and learning environments.
A very exciting new development this year will be the re-opening of our tuckshop. As part of our social awareness programme, we have partnered with one of our previous employees, Leonard, to run this facility. Leonard suffered permanent injury to his eye in a motor vehicle accident and was therefore unable to continue his work as a driver. With our intervention, and with the generous support from Lupo Bakery and other donors, Leonard will be given an opportunity to start his own business and to also provide a service to our school community. This facility will also be upgraded to ensure that we adhere to all the health regulations. Initially this service will only be provided two days a week but will expanded as the year progresses.
At long last the Runnymead road upgrade has commenced. I would like to apologise for any inconvenience during the upgrade but we are very thankful that it’s finally happening!
With the new appointment of Vanessa Smith as the Head of Academics, we are planning to do an “academic audit” during the course of the first term. It is our mission to provide the best possible education to our learners and we will ensure that existing systems and structures are amended and/or changed to guarantee a quality education.
We are very proud of our seniors’ exam results that were attained in November last year:
- Sindi Pullinger – Communication in English (Level 4) – 68%
- Connor Burns – Communication in English (Level 2) – 91% and Numeracy in English (Level 2) – 57%
- Joshua Young – Communication in English (Level 3) – 71%
Finally may I wish our Unity Family and blessed and wonderful 2019.
