Nelson Mandela International Day has been inspiring people across the country – and at Unity College – to take action and effect some change, even if only for 67 minutes. In honour of our late president, our Intermediate learners enthusiastically produced works of art of our late President; a man most of them would not have had the privilege of meeting but whom they are very aware of.
As our Seniors were at Work Experience they missed in the festivities that happened on the ground, however the Juniors and Intermediates took dogmatically to cleaning the local community and did so with huge smiles on their faces. They were only too enthused to get the freedom that comes from walking and making a difference in the Chartwell North Estates area. Like Madiba, these young people too were in all likelihood the first in their immediate families to attend School. The spirit of working as one, together for the good of others could be felt and heard with cheerful chants while making our “world” a little tidier that morning.
The purpose of Nelson Mandela International Day is to honour Mandela’s legacy and promote community service. That was achieved and with pride!
