The “Old South African” coat of arms displayed the words Ex Unitate Vires – Strength in Unity, how fitting that our School’s name reflects such a sentiment.
Unity College – there is indeed strength in Unity!
What provides the strength in Unity? I think it’s the wonderful people associated with our school, pulling together for a common cause and vision. Surely the most important cause and the greatest vision is our children!
Yet sometimes our “Unity” is divided and strength weakened by the lack of a common approach to reach that cause and fulfil that vision.
Often our children see the world in a very insular way. School is school and home is home. They often fail to make the connection between the two and sometimes act out behaviours that are “indulged” at home but may be inappropriate for other settings.
Indulgence serves only to confuse children and potentially expose them to undue stress and reprimands at school.
Let’s re-unify, let’s re-strengthen, let’s unite. Open those communication channels with staff, spend some time in discourse with a teacher in order to once again align all our joint efforts in reaching our mutual goal.
Are you an indulger? – Till next week
